A physician who has special training in diagnosing and treating disorders of the endocrine system (glands or organs that produce hormones). The endocrine system includes glands such as the pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pituitary, ovaries, testes and adipose tissue. Endocrinologists diagnose and treat conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid and parathyroid disorders, osteoporosis, adrenal and pituitary disease and some disorders of the reproductive system. They also work with patients to manage weight and nutrition and to promote healthy lifestyles.
